Supporting
developmental practice
In the
past we have referred to this aspect of our work as Organisation
Development Consultancy. It is the service on which our organisation
was founded and remains a vital part of building the practice,
effectiveness and impact of our sector through providing services to
organisations. Over the years we have provided these services to a
variety of organisations and institutions ranging from small, local
CBOs to big international institutions, national NGOs and those with
sectoral specialisations. We also work with various government
departments, and university institutes and departments involved in
social development. At any point we are working with between 10 and 15
clients and an average of 45 per year.
We have
learned from our practice that the impact of organisation development
services is most effective and developmental when it is not approached
as short-term one-off delivery of external expert solutions. We have
pioneered a practice that is based on an approach best described as
organisational accompaniment. Through our services we join
organisations for short periods on their ongoing process of
development. We assist them to connect more consciously and gain more
insight into the underlying causes and reasons for the challenges they
are facing at any point. We assist them to take responsibility for and
find ways of addressing their own developmental challenges in ways
that build their own practice and understanding of development.
Ongoing
learning is a central part of our organisational accompaniment
approach. We join with those we serve on learning journeys. We learn
with them, help them internalise learning as an element of their
ongoing practice. We link our organisational accompaniment strategy to
our other strategies by maintaining relationships with those we serve
and involving them in a broader community of developmental
practitioners through our other activities.
